Default Singer 15K112 adjusting Arm Shaft play

I’ve recently taken ownership of a 15K112 that I am checking over. I’ve got to the stage where the machine is sewing well but is a little noisy - it makes a sort of slapping noise.

After initial investigation there seams to be some play in the arm shaft detectable at the hand wheel, take up lever, con rod cap and fork. The adjusters' manual talks about how to remove and replace the arm shaft but do any of you have tips on how you adjusted out the play to make the machine run more quietly without totally dismantling the internals?

    Thanks
    G
