Default singer model 99 bobbin question.

My 1934 Singer model 99 is now working fine with the exception of the bobbin winder. It does not seem to be in sufficient contact with the drive wheel to allow it to wind. Is there anyway to adjust the contact, or maybe it needs a thicker drive belt? This is the first electrical VSM I have tried to work on.

    Bennie,

    A couple thoughts.

First, there is a couple screws you can loosen to adjust the contact pressure of the bobbin tire. Might try that.
Second, did you use a Singer size tire or one from the belt / winder tire set you buy at JoAnns?

If you use the one from JoAnns the tires are smaller than the regular Singer ones.

Thanks Joe. I ordered the bobbin tire online. It appeared to be the same as what I took off. I'll try to adjust and if that doesn't work I'll look for a thicker tire. Thank you again.

Have you checked to make sure you are using the correct bobbins. The bobbins need to have a little notch in them so they fit correctly. I had a hard time getting these bobbins and finally found some on Ebay. Let me know if you need some and I will be glad to send some to you. Message me privately.

    Camen,

The Singer 99s use the class 66 bobbins, they don't have the notch you're thinking about.
    Here's a comparison photo:

You can see the notch you're thinking about in the Class 15 bobbin on the left. The Class 66 bobbin on the right has no notch.

I think the little hole on the inside edge does engage a little pin on the winder like the class 15 notch though. The biggest problem I've had is the cheap new 66 bobbins are narrower at the rim than the vintage ones. They don't always fit the bobbin winder correctly though they work ok in the machine once they're filled.

    Rodney,
If the class 66 bobbin doesn't have that little hole, it won't engage on the bobbin winder. I've tried the new bobbins and most of the time they are poorly made/don't fit the bobbin winder. I only use vintage bobbins.

It will depend on if your bobbin winder has a little pin to fit in the notch or if it is just the "split" shaft that fits tightly in the bobbin...also my 306 was giving me fits the other day and I discovered the bobbin flanges were slightly "bent" and would actually contact the little finger that rides on the thread and kicks it out when it is full. If your bobbins are squeezed tight on that they won't spin.... Just something to look at.
