Joe, if you're gonna open it up anyway, swap the guts from another motor. That way you keep this motor case matching the machine.

I'm suspecting the pressure foot pressure spring as the culprit here for the feed issue. I have a clone that does not like to sew two pieces of fabric in a straight even line, but for free motion work she does great. Her pressure spring is worn out and can't put enough pressure on the fabric for it to feed properly, but put a quilt sandwich under the foot and she's off and running, beautiful stitches as long as I'm guiding the motion of the fabric.

That is a beautiful machine. The smoking adds to her allure.

My DS had one he named "Ole Smokey" for the same reason. He finally gave in and put a new motor on it when it started sparking in addition to smoking!

So, this guy is in denial about his smoking habit, huh? He has told you time and again, till he's blue in the face, it's not a problem--he can quit anytime, right? He's so frustrated about your insistence on doing an intervention that he gets his knickers in a wad every time you force the issue.

I'll advise you the way I'd advise my daughter on wanting to date a guy who looks good, has a decent motor, but can't be trusted--run!! It's tempting to use him, but to quote scripture, "Can a man take fire into his bosom and not get burned?"

I doubt Joe will have to replace the motor. I'm just saying that's the easy fix if you have an extra one or two laying around.

I'm not even concerned about the smoking motor. I'm more concerned about the stitching. If I can't get it to stitch straight the best motor in the world would be wasted on it.

Isn't it possible to remove the guts of a good motor and replace the bad ones in the nice blue motor housing so everything would still match? I was just wondering.

There are so many different brands and shapes of motors that switching the insides of one to the housing of another might be all but impossible. The easiest thing to do would be to sand the new motor's housing and paint it to mach.
