So I picked up this rusted machine today -- what is it?

I'm vacillating on keeping the finish as-is. I began to clean the grime off and the shellac is flaking and looks terrible. what's left of the decals is quickly rubbing off. TR-3 isn't so much cleaning it as it's putting a layer of resin on top of dirty, grimy old flaking shellac. So TR-3 is out. Kerosene is encouraging the shellac to flake, which is good, but it's also encouraging the remaining decals to flake too.
A fiddlebase in stealth mode? It looks naked without decals. The underside is in surprisingly good condition.

Use sewing machine on a cotton ball to clean the finish, what's left of it. It will not harm the surface. Then read up on Glenn's tutes about repairing the finish.
You should only use the TR3 stuff as a surface protectant, not a cleaner.

Agree, now that I know. And the dirt just keeps coming off. I assume it's part shellac, part grime, part old oil, etc. I wonder when I'll get to the actual color.

It's also very similar to this machine:

Candace, it's done a good job cleaning a machine whose finish is already very good. This one, well, not so much.

Older machines like this really should not be cleaned with chemicals.. The shellac is almost always compromised. SM Oil will clean it really well and actually bring out MORE designs. Using modern cleaners, although quicker, is more likely to strip more than the dirt faster than you can stop the process.
Remember it took a hundred or more years to put that gunk on, no need to remove in in one hour.

Looks like a Wertheim... tho' the "badge" looks like it has an "S" intwined which made me think Singer... however when I googled sewing machine badges I got this (among others).
I hope the two attachments show up... if not, I'll try to Priv Mess. you.
Good luck.
