so what if I WANT to remove decals
I have a Wheeler Wilson #9 that some brainiac decided to apply 40's era singer decals to (claiming it to be a "singer acquisition repaint" snore.... anyway..
The paint underneath is in good shape. I just want to remove the decals and then reapply the new replacement Singer 9w decals I just received.
Any suggestions on what method (we usually avoid) would work best with minimal damage to the paint underneath?
Thanks,
Steve

post a picture of the machine you want to take the decals off! well I cleaned up my singer with wd40 and it took off my decals! I have decals for it but now I think I might try my hand at painting it a different color..... should I ?

Nice machine, big sewing area.
When I want to take a very thin layer of paint off in a controlled way, I use car cutting compound. It takes a couple of microns off with a light rub, more for a heavy rub. Alcohol will remove the Japan as well so I wouldn't risk that.

mike, thanks but I do not believe that this is still the japanning. It "feels" like it is a repaint. a well done repaint, but a repaint. I will try the automotive rubbing or polishing compound. I have both. (leftovers from the 67 Dart convertible restore)
