First: We believe it is an American #7 Handcrank. EVERYTHING matches the typical #7 except the stitch length adjustment, and the completely blank slide plates.

Second, this is a Shaw's Patent New England Chain Stitch Walking foot machine. Dates to around 1863-4
It is also Found on Carter Bay's book on Page 161

Oh that Shaw's is really different! I don't think I've ever seen a machine with the spool in that location before, not even in photos. How neat! And from 1860's...talk about built to last!

They both look like they're in really good shape. Amazing to think just how LONG these beauties have been knocking around on this planet. Their makers could have never dreamed we'd be posting pictures of them online someday.

Hey Steve, I know you've already checked but.... there's no chance the stitch length plate is just backwards from someone mis-assembling it in the past? That's of course assuming your packing mentor didn't do check it too?
