Default tension when doing FMQ on 201 - intermittent problem

I've been happily free motion quilting on my 201 for the past day or so, but twice the needle has suddenly broken because the thread (a fine one) has jammed in the tension discs. When I rethread and try lowerering the presser foot and gently pulling the thread, by the time the tension is at 4 or 5, the thread won't go through the discs. A bit of fiddling about with the dial and the thread and it's OK again. Any ideas? This is so frustrating, because otherwise I'm doing pretty well with getting good stitches.
