If you know your inside and outside diameters and gear ratio you can try BostonGear. They make a wide variety of gears and may have something in stock that will work.

I wish I could get metal gears. I'm sure they'd cost more, but at least they'd last and I'd feel like the fix was worth it. New plastic just feels temporary and like I'm building in a weak link.

I might just do it anyway, I guess. I've never replaced gears or re-timed a machine, I suppose it'd be good practice if nothing else. Any idea what the expected life span for a modern plastic gear is?

TNT Repair has the gears and very good instruction guides.

If you like the machine then fix it. The replacements should get the machine another 40-50 years down the road.

If the machine doesn't have other issues, replacing the gears sounds reasonable. Kind of like the Elna pulley wheel. One of my sisters has this type machine, and I'll pass the information along to her.

40-50 years sounds pretty good - for some reason I was thinking they'd break much faster than that, but the original gear lasted nearly that long so not sure why I was thinking that... I'm just biased against plastic, I guess!

$9.99 is pretty darn reasonable, especially since I'm considering the machine to have been free. The "cam" (just the one fashion disk) is in fine shape, it's just that top gear that went crunch. The vertical shaft gear IS the gear that broke, though.

So here's a question - that vertical shaft gear meshes with another plastic gear that rolls horizontally - shouldn't they be replaced together? If one broke, that probably means there's a good chance that the other one is weak too, right?

It still bothers me to put plastic back in, but if it'll make the machine outlive me I suppose I can't complain, LOL.

    Sewnoma,

When I did the top gears on the 413s and 457 the comments from those giving instructions is that the horizontal gear almost never breaks. It's always the vertical shaft top gear.

I replaced the top gear by itself and the machines worked just find.

To replace the horizontal shaft gear you have to remove the shaft completely. Lots of things to remove, replace and adjust when you do that.

Ah, good to know! Thanks for all the feedback. I'm feeling a lot better about this machine now; I think I will fix it and find a good home for it.

I had basically the same thing with an acquired Singer Merritt 2404. After a though cleaning/oiling the plastic gear, yellow due to age, lost a few teeth. I was able to secure a new nylon gear on line and the old girl is up and running. I don't think the new gear will fail in my lifetime??. She is now happily resting on my display shelf with other siblings and cousins.

If the new gear will last 40-50 years, I will count myself as lucky if I outlive it! But I probably won't keep this machine after I fix it - I still find it to be a very ugly machine and I just don't need it with all the other lovelies I have in my collection. I might still paint it, partially for practice and partially to make it more appealing, and then I'll find a new home for it where it can be used and loved. I'm getting to know more and more sewers locally so that gives me a better chance of finding a happy home for it.

    Default Verticle top shaft gear.

If that is what you need, P/N 155819 you can find it at Sewingmachineparts.com for $9.95 also tandtrepair.com has a 457 schematic/exploded view of your machine in a pdf format showing that gear location. Hope this helps.
