Then the person she got it from must have sewed a LOT. I got a few interesting drawer things, too. Everything was coated in something though. Maybe oil heat? It wasn't like typical smoker stuff. There is no finish over that paint either. It was either already gone or I got it gone by wiping it off. Very odd. I'm pretty sure nobody repainted it recently. I'm pretty sure it was repainted before it was completely assembled.

Miriam - What did you use to remove the built up brownish 'glaze' that's at the seams?
Hahahaha! Maybe we should let the 'glaze' remain on our machines! - you know people buy furniture and cabinets and PAY EXTRA for that glazing technique! Hahahaha!
Nan - who needs a new bobbin winding tire ... just like you.

Tri-flow dissolves that glaze some times - tooth pick gentle so it doesn't go too deep. I left the new bobbin tire off until I get it cleaned up a bit more. I haven't done a sew test yet. I was at the end of my day.

Miriam,
The black under the mocha color could well be a black primer paint. And although I haven't seen them all, all of the bottom plates I've seen have been black. Are the bottom plates for the 301s usually the same color as the machine?

Miriam, I'm with you. Appears to have been factory reprinted. My experience is the original paint on this era of machines wears better than this. I can't imagine the bobbin winding thread spool wearing paint like that. The undercarriage not having the black under mocha is telling of something - not sure what.

Usually they have the mocha plate, Joe. That mocha paint has not held up well at all. It could well be a candidate for the purple paint people. That machine runs very well - I think it is well used and treated well (mostly), too. We helped a family install some kitchen cabinets today but I did copy down the serial number before we left. It is NA124554
