Not vintage but there is a beginner serger class on Craftsy that may be visually helpful for cleaning and threading.
I think it was a free class.

My pleasure! I stopped fighting my serger the day I figured that out. Now there are only tears when I re-thread

I kid, even that doesn't cause tears anymore.

I inherited 1989 White Speedylock from my Mom, it was horrible to try and use. It came with the wrong manual, the video showing how to thread it was wrong. Finally found the correct manual and learned to thread it right. My dd has it and really likes it.

AA, thanks so much for the pics and Happy Helper's guide to cleaning a serger ! And everyone for the feedback about the sergers.

It's only because of my love for vintage SMs that I even took the sergers. Anything that well made with that quality of metal, that looks and feels industrial, can probably survive many decades and keep on ticking, just like our SMs.
Thanks,
Sue

I'm thinking about some non-chemical ways to clean up the exterior of the sergers. I was thinking of some baby wipes or diluted Dawn and water to cut through the grime. What do you all use for the non-shellac, slightly newer machines to take care of the dirt ?
Thanks, Sue

I had a vintage serger about 6 years ago. I had it serviced and it worked for about 2 months then it gave up. At this point I could probably fix it but then I had a newborn and no time.

It was a Hobbylock. Probably wasn't a darn thing wrong with it except for the carbon based lifeform in front of it.

I have a Bernette I can barely find any info on. I never mastered it before I put it in storage. It is a handy tool with sewing.
