    Miriam: WOW you are not kidding..... There a metric tonne of old sewing machines on the Indiana/indianapolis CL site...

    and i have NEVER seen a machine that sews metal!!!!

    LOL I missed that one... They aren't selling worth a darn here anyway... I just keep buying them... might have to add on to the house or something... I bought a 301 tonight. The thing was all balled up and the bobbin area was totally jammed and the feed dogs weren't coming up... The lady wanted an arm and a leg because she saw what the others were listed for... OH the topper - it was her grandma's. Her daughter wants to take fashion design in college so she is selling the 301 to go buy a $69 machine at Walmart.

    I apologize in advance for where my "tinkerer" mind goes....

    If you lined the insides of the opening with firebrick it could double as a hearth.....

    There was one seller on UK ebay who used to post pictures of his/her black domestic Singer sewing machines sewing through flattened soft drinks cans to show how "heavy duty" they were!!!
