Charlee, I am with you! We have 9 treadles in the house and three more in the garage waiting to be refinished! I can't get any more treadles - just portable machines! At that, I have nearly 40 machines now!

Charlee, congratulations! Remind me - is your Hazel a New Vertical Feed or the original Vertical Feed? I believe it is the original older style. I have been putting on bindings with my "Betty," a old style Davis Vertical Feed like I believe yours is - pre 1900 -, but lately I have to go around my quilts twice to get a nice stitch. The first time around she does ok, then a few bunched up stitches - very loose, then ok again. When you are putting binding on a king/queen sized quilt, this is a lot of work. When I take the quilt out and just stitch with her, she is perfect! I'm beginning to think it is because of the weight of the quilt pulling? I really think I am keeping the quilt up without drag, but I wonder? I can't wait for you to put on a binding to see what your Hazel does!

Hazel is old style...but a high arm. I figure she's about 1887 or so....after (of course) the last patent date of May 1885, but before 1890, when the Davis company fired up operations in Dayton, OH. Hazel was made in Watertown, NY. Davis shut down operations in NY in 1888 to make the move.

I have a table runner that is about ready for binding...just have to finish hand quilting the border on it and it'll be ready for Hazel to stitch on the binding....I figured a small task for her first job here! :lol: I have a quilt top that I just need to get the borders on...she may get that whole job of quilting it....she treadles really easy, btw...

It's usually my favorite of the moment...or it's whichever one is most convenient at the time!! ;)

Is this truly a complaint, or are you bragging about all your wonderful vintage machines?!!!!! :lol: :lol:

Question ---

I have a kenmore 158.14000 - took the head out of the cabinet to clean the machine. Thanks to the gremlins that attack at the worst time, I cannot find the set screws to hold the machine head in the cabinet. Any ideas on where to look for replacements?

You can try ebay or googling Kenmore set screws. I don't know if they're the same size as Singer or not. I'd put some more effort into finding them before buying new ones. WORST case, as I had to do this with one of my machines, you can buy a tap and die set and re-drill the holes to fit common grub screws available at Lowes. But, finding replacements would be cheaper and easier.

Take off the screw knob at the top left of the machine (the pressure foot tension control). Take the face plate off. Spray WD 40 lightly on the parts where the pressure foot rod is supported by the cast iron sewing machine frame. Gently heat it with a hair dryer. Stop every few minutes to try the foot lever. Once you get it heated up, spray it again with WD 40 on the rod. It should come loose.

Don't force it. Heat it and gently try rocking it up and down if it will move at all. New ones can be had but you should be able to keep yours.

If you have another machine in a singer cabinet you can test drive one on that machine. If it works, take it to your OSMG or local hardware store and see if they have one.

I'm not sure what was going on with that 128. From what I've read they were:

"#128 normally portable with hand crank, knee control or electrified"

The wooden top was missing from the box, and there is a hole the box bottom where there would have been a knee control, and the black metal part that covers the electric parts is gone, so I am thinking that someone removed the motor and the electronic stuff at one time for some reason or other. Or it was originally a hand crank and they removed that,which I think is less likely.

So, I will be putting a hand crank on this one, it's too small to slip into my treadle base and it will be fun to have it be portable.

thanks, I wondered how they came in a case? They had to be handcranks. I haven't found one yet but I didn't think I would ever find a treadle cheap either...someday
