Vintage ZigZag machines, piecing 1/4" (scant) seam allowances

Here's the two I'm messing with right now:
Aldens;
[ATTACH=CONFIG]454127[/ATTACH]
Domestic;
[ATTACH=CONFIG]454128[/ATTACH]
The Aldens can be set at "M" and used as a SS as long as the ZZ foot and needle plate is left on. To use the SS foot or SS needle plate you have to set the control at "L".
The Domestic is left home only on the SS or ZZ. No way to set it in the center position.

Why can't you use a generic straight stitch foot for the Aldens? I wouldn't consider it a LH machine since it has center SS capability. Maybe I'm not understanding something here... LH machines don't have centered straight stitching .

I suppose I could if I left the ZZ needle plate on it.
But if I put the SS needle plate on it, it has to go to the L position and use the offset SS foot. I don't know why, but that's the way this machine is.
Perhaps it's not a true LH machine, but on SS it does go left.

Here's a pic of the SS foot and needle plate, you can see how the needle hole is off center to the left.

I do like this machine. It's the Japanese equivalent to the Necchi BU as far as I can tell. .....
Hold the phone I just remembered a bunch of HS foots to look in.

Well, I've searched through all my stashes of feet and accessories and I do not have one single high shank, center homing, straight stitch foot to try. Phooey! I guess I'll check with the LSMG next time or get one from Sew-Classic.
Oh wait, I have an adaptor to use low shank feet on high shank machines..... problem solved
