I get lucky now and then. So far not at garage sales and rarely at chain thrift shops (like Goodwill); I have the best luck at the smaller local charity shops.
It does seem like Oregon has an inordinate amount of good machines though. I am itching for a road trip up the north coast again. It's such a beautiful drive. It's just impossible to get time off work right now.

In fact, this week I went by and there was a sewing cabinet without a machine in it. However the drawers were full of notions. Also, the bottom drawer had an instruction manual for a Singer 603 and a box full of black cams and feet. I talked to the manager and he let me buy the manual and box.

Houston's craiglist does have some good ones - right now a pretty 301 in a cabinet and price isn't bad - te 2 tone color version which, out of about 10 301's, I DON'T have..sigh..but I have at least 4 in the 500 or 503 combo and about 3 in the 401/403 combo and 3 fw's... so far no cheap 319 or 306 has appeared though I've seen a 319 in a nice cabinet but serviced it's around $500..bit steep for me even though the machine appears to be great as well as the cabinet
