Mark! You were right about the bent/tipped post! There is a screw on the other end of the arm that holds it in place and it turned out to be loose!
The bobbin winds almost correctly now, still needs some fine tuning, but the thread now travels up and down the bobbin shaft.

I also tried out the foot pedal and it really works a lot smoother.

Yea :-) -- Thank you so much everyone who took time to respond.

Barny, all the responses help. They make me explore the workings of the machine and it makes me feel more connected to the new toy - I mean tool..

    It's all good :-). Thanks!

cathyvv, I will look into that - I have a hunch that maybe the tire that was on it is the wrong size. It is the same as fits my Singers.

I'm not familiar with Brother based sewing machines - anyone know whether they have their own sets of tires?

ps. ETA -- Ebay says they do..... err. wrong......(?) What I saw advertised as Brother is actually universal.....

    Cari --- nice :-) - thank you![/QUOTE]

LOL, that was actually meant for Rodney, his DD has my Mademoiselle and I thought the Citation looks similar. But if the mention of the Mademoiselle helped in any way then great! The bobbin tire for a top winder may be a different size than the front winders, usually they're thinner if they're different. Threading it for bobbin winding, bring the thread over to the tension button and wrap it from the bottom of the button clockwise so the thread goes over the top of itself on the way to the winder, sort of a half figure eight. Clear as mud?

Cari -- It's just fascinating how many look-a-likes there are, I had not come across a Mademoiselle....

So, which ones are the thinner tires?
When I was still looking into the winder issues, I noticed that the tire is flush with a little post while it is in the disengaged position... That appears to stop it from rotating - maybe on purpose?

Yep, it looks like it's too fat. I bought a bunch of different sized ones a few years ago so I have the right one when I need it.

very nice find. and sewing on buttons with a machine is fine. I just use the normal presser foot and turn the wheel by hand (no electric power). still quicker than doing it with a needle and thread.
