Background, 5 yrs ago my DH was driving back and forth to out local lawn trimmings recycle, using back roads. He noticed that an old house was getting ready for demolish and a few things were out by the garbage can. He went back and forth several times and the things were still there, it started to rain and he told me I just could not let them sit in the rain, so he brought them home. the first one was a 8x4 foot solid top harvest table with hand carved legs. Beautiful! The second one- was a very old card table with some kind of funny opening on it, the top is a little warped the metal was rusty, but we decided to keep it anyway put in the back of garage and just forgot about it.

I have been collecting machines for a few months and just got a Singer 301, during the night I woke up from a sound sleep.The Dime dropped, there was a singer card table in Our garage!I got up, 3am, flash light in hand and went to check. Yup! but I could not get it out until today. So here it is I'm afraid it isn't for a 301 but I wonder if I can modify it ( without harming it ) so the 301 could fit in it. I think it is a card table 308?
Sorry for the long story but how often do things like this happen?

I would not cut it. I would find out the right machine.....

Steve I think she wants to see the harvest table that he found at the same time, I'll try to get one.
I was not going to cut it but add a small trim inside near the supports for the FW, the 301 rest on a ledge inside.

Woo Hoo! Glad to be wrong on that one! Can't wait to see it. My GGF was a furniture maker in western NY in the early 20th century. I sat at one of his claw-foot tables twice on special occasions as a kid.

If you flip that table over, you'll see that its 2 screws to remove each of the two brackets for the FW.
I would take those off, get some flat stock, drill holes in the FS to match the existing ones in the wood.

No need to cut anything.

Maybe make a 3rd, to support the machine at the front too. The FW is about the same height as the 301, so this should work... Just make sure that the length is right. I think it is, but my FW and 301 are both tucked away at the moment.

This way, if / when you end up with a FW, you can go back to its original state, or leave it convertible. And you don't ruin the resale value.

For the wood, try some Murphy's oil soap. Let it dry completely, give it a very light sand, clean it with a tack cloth and apply some Howard Feed N Wax. If you want to stain and seal, do that before the Feed N Wax.

Great story Windblown. The mental image of you in your jammies, flash light in hand, in your garage at 3:00am looking for the cardtable to verify it is a Singer cartable priceless.
