Don't use Goo Gone to get tar out of light colored carpet, either. Ask me how I know! LOL (fifteen years later!)

WD-40 can silver decals if they're compromised at all, and they often are with this many years on them.

Dave McCallum uses Naptha (Lighter Fluid) on Featherweights to clean them and prepare them for shining them up so it should be safe.

I use oil and my very soft finger nails and have never needed anything else, not for adhesive.

I was working on a Singer redeye the other day that had what looked like residue from first aid bandage stuck on the throat area. The fabric part was gone but the white remained - it was imbedded into the paint. The Naptha took some of it off - oil took some off - Naptha took off the oil but the residue was still there. Glenn said to try acetone and it worked. I had to be very careful not to get near the decals. Then I took off down to the brown stuff getting it out of the paint so I've had to add a bit of shellac to get it looking half way good. But the white adhesive is now gone. I keep polishing it so it shines a little more now. She looks good now days:
