I watch Craig List, and have found 4 of them, for less than $100. One was $4, but it needed a lot of work. None are great, but all are useable. Usually they are ads from people who realize that the condition of theirs won't bring top dollar, or they spell wrong, (search for "sowing" and "singer") sometimes they are just at a yard sale.
The worst thing to me, is that repair parts are soo expensive, a needle plate, a bobbin case, a hook or a motor can set you back upwards of $35 each.

What's so special about the 221? It's that everyone wants to say they have one. I admit, I felt the pressure to buy one when almost everyone in my quilting guild showed up with their FWs for a work day. They don' do anything that another less expensive vintage Singer won't do. ... and in some cases, less. But they are cute... they are lightweight....they make the most wonderful 'click-click-click' when they sew and they carry huge bragging rights to everyone out there that knows about the FWs. I was really surprised when I had to buy a bobbin case for my 15-91 and it cost $4.99 vs. a FW bobbin case at $30.00+. It's like owning an expensive car.... everything is more expensive... parts, repairs, etc.

I admit, I have 4 and would be willing to sell a couple. I'd like to have a 222 because I do need to repair things that need that open arm. But they are so high $$$ so if I sell a few of my machines, I'd think about getting that 222.

So, there are still FWs out there. Like someone said, Singer made millions of them. I've gotten the most at estate sales but if those are too high priced in your area, check out auctions, garage sales and craigslist. And have patience.... this is probably a test to see how much patience you have. It will come to you.... at the most unexpected place and time.

I have a 222k and thinking of selling it... Never used it as I only got it little over 2 months ago and now I need $$. I use my 221 all the time but when I need fancier stitches, I used the newer FW singer. I paid $750 for mine and it has new converter for U.S. Power. Sigh... Wanna keep it but need dough....I'm like you... Can't fathom the hi prices for FW even though it's a great workhorse and small (221). Oh yes I do have a white FW too but saving it for inheritance for GD.
