The Featherweight at the end of the 6.5 hour drive was only $75.

that is exactly my dilemma. Even if I spent $100 on gas, it's still only $175 and still a bargain. And I get to take a long drive which I love doing. The FWs I my area is prized $250 and up.

FW are about 200$ in my area. And they are not showing up very often. So one day, after looking for it for about 8 months, I saw one for 175$ and I broke: I bought it. It was in good shape and good working condition. But three weeks later, I found another one for 40$! It was in better cosmetic condition. I sold the first one for the same price I paid and kept the second one (a cute centennial).
So my advice would be to wait. One will show up in your area and for a good price one day or another.

I bought my FW221 in 2005 and paid $500.00 for it at a flea mark et. It had been barely used by an elderly lady. It was all re-conditioned, checked out and fine in all ways. Within year it needed some adjustment on the bobbin.
Went to a serviceman for featherweights in Carthage, Mo., and he did the adjustments. He said the price was high at that time due to demand; women wanting them to take to the warm spots of Texas and Arizona where they spend the winter. He said when the demand gets up there, they can charge whatever they want. After that they were going for 200.00. His hobby is fixing up all kinds of sewing machines, and usually has featherwights on hand. If you want his name and phone no., pm. me. Mariah

I agree, consider a 301, too. Unless you plan on traveling frequently with your machine, the 301 is better for large quilting projects. I have both and love them. My FW goes RVing with us.

unfortunately i didn't get the $75 FW. my friend stood me up as he's so busy and the seller didn't reply to my emails and my shipping proposal and other payment options. he must have thought of me as a scam artist on CL. i am so bummed out as deal like this comes rarely. there was this estate sale in my area and they said they might ask for $300 (as the one they had previous to this had a FW that sold for $350). oh well, it is what it is. now on to my search. TBH, i already have a FW and i just wanted to add a second one for back-up. to the OP, yes what it is with this FW that get people so addicted. now i am addicted to FWs as well.....

The seller is, however, stupid. Don't just say you found it in an abandoned storage locker. At least make up a great story about its history.
