What's so great about fw 221
i understand they are light weight. workhorses. little problems. i understand supply and demand; but why such variations in prices. i'd like to purchase one i've been looking at ebay and my local cl. but they go from $350 to $1,000 for what looks like the same 221. i sometimes thing the ones for $1,000 must have gold on them. what's your opinion on why so much.

the one for the 1000 might be a 222 which is a free arm FW. There have been some members on here who have said they might sell an extra one or two that they have. I paid $275 + ptg for one on ebay and my sister sent me one from an auction in IL that was $250 + ptg. Then again some have been super lucky and went to an estate or rummage sale and found one for $50 or less.

The great thing about this machine is its size. Excellent for quilting and everyone's so obsessed with this machine (myself included). Singer made a handful of this machine ( about 2-3 million) and yet prices are so ridiculously high every where. I was lucky enough to get one for a good price and I want one more. But everywhere I go, CL or eBay they are prized 250-500. Your best bet in finding an affordable FW is thru estate sale.

Four years ago, one of my retirement gifts from several coworkers was cash. I put it toward a beautiful Featherweight costing $600! It was from a wonderful shop that sells/services them. Received free lessons too. But I knew this was a very high price. Last week, my husband's cousin purchased a 99K in great condition at a small town auction after no one had bid on it. The seller told her he should just give it to her, but finally asked $25 plus tax. She bought it for me! I paid her and now feel I've paid a fair price average on the two machines. :-) I've asked the cousin to watch for a FW in the future....she lives 2.5 hr. drive away. I would like another one.

Maybe, but I'd try to make a weekend out of it or something. That would be about $90 in gas for me, so it would have to be a pretty good machine.
