First, it's ok. These old machines are pretty tough.

My personal favorite metal polish is "Flitz" I learned about it in the restaurant business, we used it for cleaning the copper salad bar because it is reasonable human safe.

My most often used is Colgate tooth paste and toothbrush (white paste not modern gels).

Brasso is when I want it shiny.

Sewing machine oil is the easiest thing to use for loosening old oil deposits.

Hoppes #9 is awesome, but I don't like the smell.

Don't stress it.

If you are REALLY worried, watch local C/L, find a free-$20 old machine you would not care about, and get it to practice on.

I just saw a 10.00 kenmore at a thrift shop ... Practice what a great idea!
