Default Worth fixing up the old "new model"?

Found this in my grandparents basement. All it says on it is foley and williams, made in Cincinnati OH.

It looks like all that's missing is the bobbin and bobbin case.
I'm not even sure where to put it if I had it.

I think I can clean it up and get it turning smooth.

What are the chances I can find a bobbin and bobbin case that will work?
The belt is also gone. Are they common sizes?
Lastly, how is the Stich quality of these older machines, can you back stitch with them?

    Thanks

Is that a dead mouse on it? You would really be surprised how nice that machine will work. You should be able to find a shuttle for it. Bobbins are available, too. There is a lot of info on QB for fixing up the old machines - read a lot before you start - read anything Glenn or Muv have posted.

    Thanks for the quick reply.
My guess is that's an old pincushion. I had to look twice though because there was a dead mouse in the drawer.

Your "New Model" uses a Boye 14 needle and Boye 13 shuttle and bobbin. These are new old stock supplies available on ebay or from fellow collectors.

Welcome! I'd say it's worth fixing it up. There's a very pretty machine with some family history for you hiding under the grime. As suggested, spend some time reading here before you start, sewing machine oil is your best friend when it comes to cleaning these old machines. Anything harsher stands a good chance of destroying your decals.

I thought the thing hanging off the machine was a dead mouse too until I looked closer. Be happy it's a thick pincushion, a lot of machines just had an old cloth wrapped around them there and over the years the pins scratched the finish off behind them.

    Thanks everyone,
50 bucks for the shuttle is the best I can find right now.
I will have to keep looking.

It would be fun to clean it up and refinish the wood.

On Glenn's tutorial: http://www.quiltingboard.com/vintage...t186522-2.html there are before and after pics of a Vindex we cleaned up - pics on frame 18 and after You can go into Glenn's profile and look at his started threads for a lot of information on refinishing the old machines and their tables and legs. READ READ READ before you start in on anything. Muv has info for cleaning up the old machines and how to use them. You can find her stuff in the sticky notes.

Keep looking for a shuttle - one will turn up.

This machine and cabinet can be fixed up very nicely. The machine will sew.

LMBO, Deegore. Sorry yours didn't come with the optional 2nd dead mouse. LOL
