I agree! They feel completely different and in reality, the repro handwheel and HC are easily 75% of that cost and the originals are tough to get for a good price.

The machine does not appear to be terribly rusty -- of course, I'm looking at a photo -- I suspect this one will be sewing in no time! Merry Christmas to all on the Board!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY

WOW - that one should clean up - any rust on the bobbin area?

If the accessories are any indication, there's some work to do but I'm not overly concerned. The handwheel turns albeit more reluctantly than the one that's at home. Even if it was seized solid, I could still get parts from it.

Uh,.... I didn't look?? The house was scary enough I made sure it was the machine I wanted, the HC was original and got the eff outta there!! I'll write the story out when I get home but suffice it to say it was "we were unescorted and left the $$ in a cup on a bookshelf" weird.

Tammi, I answered an ad for a machine one time. DH went with me... Anyway we went way far down an odd road down by East Overshoe turned on anther one and went to North Hick where the gene pool is a drip... it was the 5th house on the right and nope the GPS didn't recognize it. It looked like a vacated dump so we pulled in and managed to avoid knocking any piles over. Then we saw just plain old garbage.... ew... Finally a young woman came out of the creepy house and said to follow her. The house looked like something that was out of the 1960s or something I'm pretty sure they were using... Anyway we got the machine and got out of there. The cabinet smelled really strange. I think I know what it was..............

OK, spent about 45 minutes, cleaned the surface gunk off - nothing in depth at this point, greased, oiled and stole all of her jewelery. The poor thing doesn't know me and I go and mug her for everything she's got!

She'll get it back though. She's not a parter. Even with her twig as a spool pin.

Even the hook area looks pretty good. She turns flawlessly already. That's the benefit of living in our arid climate. Even abused, they revive easily.

The finish on this machine is really weird. It's flat - not shiny - a lot like the godzilla finish but not as bumpy. The shellac on the machine doesn't feel failed, and the decals are in great shape. I have no idea what to think of this finish. Perhaps I'll do Glenn's french polish process with this one. I've been wanting to try it and waiting for the right machine.

The bentwood may be salvageable to some degree. The veneer is gone, but I thought I might try to remove it and stain and lacquer the wood underneath. It have some neat carriers inside it. I recognize the accessories box holder and the oil can holder, but I don't know what these 2 are:

Here are the attachments I'll try to salvage. The rest I've dumped in the garbage along with the box. Everything is rusted inside. I know what the quilt guide is. The binder style is new to me but I have no idea what the last one is or if it's whole. The part number on the back is currently obscured by rust, but I'll see if some evaporust will take care of that to get that and do some research.

    Here's the story:
This guy advertises lots of things in he buy and sell. His ads are off putting and often uninformed.http://www.kijiji.ca/v-hobbies-craft...fer/1036944322

I'm sure I've posted one or 2 in the giggles thread, probably even this machine. See, it's been in there for almost a year, and was listed for $100. Seriously. Last night, he dropped it to $50. I saw it when I got my "digest" of sewing machine ads posted yesterday.

I texted him this morning when I saw that he hadn't checked his email (ad said he'd prefer text or calls). Yes, he had it still, I could go by any time to see it. DH said he'd grab it on the way home from work if that time was better for this guy. Asked him which time was better and he said it didn't matter, he wasn't going to be home, probably no one would be. Huh? I suggested then that we could just meet after Christmas, and he said he wouldn't be around then either and wasn't driving back for this.

He said when I got to the house to call him, he does this all the time. He'd tell me where to go to see the machine. Then he tells me he's a landlord and he does this at lots of his rentals and his tenants know about it but not where the machine is. Thinking it was weird but more than a little suspicious, I told him that DH and I both would be there around 6pm.

We got there around 5:15 and I called him as instructed. He said to go to the back door and go right in, it was unlocked. What? This house is right across the street from a major bus station and in the University area. That's not the most safe thing to do! And how must the tenants feel!

We walk into a dark landing and I search for the light switch. DH finds it and flips it. Burned out.

This is how a lot of slasher flicks start isn't it?

He says to go up the stairs to the main floor. I do this and try to find a switch for the kitchen. I feel around and can't find it in the pitch dark.

OK, maybe not pitch. I can see the shadows of things looming against the backdrop of the window outside. Piles and piles of things. Finally I find the switch and flip it. I immediately wish I had left the lights off. I asked DH later if my look of horror was anything like the one he had. It was worse. This IS straight out of a horror movie, at least to an OCD neat freak. It's a lost episode of hoarders. Stuff everywhere including dirty dishes. Stuff stacked on the floor, the counters, everywhere. Immediately my body tries to curl into itself and take up as little space as possible.

This is the point in the slasher movie where the crazy with the huge knife pops out from behind... well he could have been hiding anywhere in there, couldn't he?

Following his directions we make our way to the living room where the machine is. There's a sleeping bag on the couch and stuff stacked everywhere! I spot the machine, check that the hand crank and the handwheel are there and tell the guy (still on the phone) that I'll take the machine and ask where can I leave the money. He asks if anyone is home. I mention that it sounded like someone was home in the basement, I'd heard a TV. He describes his hiding place, tells me not to repeat it out loud. It sounds like he doesn't trust whoever's in the basement. I find the spot, put the money in and we leave.

I really feel the need for a shower.

Yes Glenn's method will do some good after you get your shower... read everything he has on it and my stuff, too... I give you my mistakes and all... It is simple but tricky to get it right. That machine will perk - just don't do any scrubbing on it at all before you do his method. With the parts stripped off, you should do the Glenn's method of finish next.

Sew glad you saved it from being in that house. I can relate. Some of the best things are picked up in places you could not live.
