Miriam, I can only imagine the stress your parents would go through if the FBI were to mistake their house for the other one! I honestly can't think of a lot of good reasons to rent by the week - usually for cash. Certainly no one in the neighborhood would likely be thrilled to know it's going on.

Cari! They didn't make any restitution at all? I would think the judge wouldn't have granted a search warrant for something so vague and as it turned out - ambiguous! I thought it had to be specific - to the address at least. I mean hey could have been on the wrong block for that matter! Of course, if they were deliberately misinformed...

HelenAnn, if it's any consolation, that 201 has a great home now. Yeah, it was a creepy situation all around. I am really glad it turned out well but I don't think I'll ignore it anymore if a seller gives me the heebie-jeebies anymore - with or without a DH escort...

Okay, since trying to keep it short makes it sound fishy here's the whole story.

We lived in a small town at the time, the kind of place where the classes are really well defined. Those with money and clout, the native population, and everyone else. Our house was in the middle of a row of small houses, the two center houses were the same color with the same glassed in front porch. Like I said before, it was the creeps next door in the other green house who were dealing.
A kid at the high school got busted for dealing at the school(he frequented the creeps house-once we found out the whole story we had seen him come and go many times). He belonged to one of those families with clout. To save his own neck he offered to point out the house he got his drugs from. He deliberately pointed out the wrong house. Yes my address was on the warrant, along with the made up name "Timmy Beam" as living there, and a whole bunch of other made up crap they were looking for.
What they found and confiscated from my house- a stack of old tattoo and other hippie magazines with ads in them for paraphernalia out of a closet and an antique brass beam scale off the top of a bookcase that didn't even work.
I was mailed a summons of being charged with having paraphernalia but it was dropped when I went to court. I never got my stuff back, didn't get restitution, didn't even get an apology from the judge who lived on the same street as the kid who started the whole mess. I think the judge and the prosecutor were too embarrassed that they had been hoodwinked by a teenager.

That's just terrible! I would think they'd be fairly quick to make sure that you didn't embarrass them further by demanding restitution publicly but back then, I guess we weren't so quick to do those things (not that I think that it's good that we do now.) Of course, with the culture in that town the way you describe, it might have just made it harder for you anyway. Did you move after that or did the other guy?

The creeps next door were actually starting to move out when we got home, so we knew something was up before we even got to our front door. They were long gone by the next morning. We stayed there for two more years, the rent was cheap and I was going to college so money was tight.

I can't believe my parents stay in this house. In April there was a bullet through the siding and through an interior door and then bounced off a window sill and onto the floor - in other words the bullet passed through the whole house. Then the neighbors... They won't move.

Now if bullets had been part of the equation I would have moved as fast as the creeps did. If your parents have lived there a long time I can understand why they don't want to leave, but bullets flying you would think would be a good motivator.

There is not sound reasoning going on around here now is there??? Assisted living would morph into dementia care in about 2 days. Some days I wonder about my sanity. I'm rather stuck here and hope no stray bullets or stray criminals enter the place.

I have a 201 that has finish like that. It has a bit of checking though. I wonder what you did with yours?

I went through the same thing with my Aunt for the two weeks that turned into three months. Paranoid personality coupled with 5 years of chemo along with the cancer affecting her brain did not make for a person with rational thoughts. Hospice tried to get her into a nursing home but no one would take her because of her behavior issues. Some of the things she did when she got upset were so gross I won't say it here. And I just had to continue biting my tongue and putting up with her til I could get away for a little while and be able to vent. So I really feel for your situation. It's never easy.
