preprinted quilt back question
I am considering buying one of these to attempt my first FMQ on my new JUKI 2010. Has anyone ever used this type of backing? And, I guess I will have to quilt it with the backing on top and the top of my quilt underneath. So, I won't even be seeing the top of the quilt when sewing....this seems strange, but is this how it works?
Here is the link to my potential purchase: http://www.fabric.com/quilting-fabri...t-backing.aspx
Also, I can not prewash this backing and I do plan on using poly batting (either Hobbs Polydown or Quilters Dream Select). So, what do you think about prewashing or not prewashing the fabric for the top? I am concerned about the fabric shrinking and the batting not, therefore causing pulling, etc. I generally have always been a prewasher, as that is how I was taught.

Denise: I didn't know that Fabric.com offered this item. I think it is a really neat idea but like you I am a prewasher. I don't think that having a prewash front and a non-washed back would create problems. The manufacturer knows it won't be washed any shrinkage should be absorbed between the quilting. Maybe you could call the store and ask them. Just some thoughts. Without a doubt someone more expert will have some info. I'll be watching.

If that is the cost per yard, the preprinted backing will surely be very expensive. I don't think either fabric will shrink so much that it will become a problem. If you have a little to spare, wash and dry a piece with your regular washing and measure it to see if it shrunk and how much. Be sure to measure the piece before washing and drying it.

intersted in the answers for sure !! no idea tho. However - do not routinely pre-wash and have never had that probelm. when I use dark batiks, I do prewash and have never had a problem with shrinkage in the pieces which were not prewashed.

I am so glad to know this backing is available. Wow! Have to be sure your bobbin runs very smoothly. I would check the bobbin side every little bit till I was sure all was going well. Wish I had this fabric sooner. I am planning to meander my queen size quilt this week. I used control + and could see the fabric better. Love that fabric. For 108" I think it is a great price!
